Music Theory Midwest (MTMW) is a regional academic society. Originally chartered in 1990, MTMW serves the US Midwest and adjacent Canadian provinces: Area I (Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Ontario); Area II (Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin); Area III (Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Manitoba); and Area IV (Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee).
MTMW sponsors an annual conference of research in music theory that traditionally takes place in late spring at a midwestern university campus. The conference encourages scholarship by graduate students via the Arthur J. Komar Award for the outstanding student paper delivered each year, while simultaneously showcasing work by university faculty and independent researchers. More recently, MTMW has linked to this event a pre-conference workshop that focuses on a particular topic of interest in the field of music theory, providing an intensive learning experience and exchange for a small group of students and scholars.
MTMW is governed by an executive committee elected by current members of the society. MTMW is a non-profit corporation under the auspices of Chapter 317A of the corporate statutes of the State of Minnesota and Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
